Due to the current global fuel crisis we have had to add a passenger fuel levy of $20 per passenger. This comes into effect on Tuesday 24th March 2026.
What has caused the fuel surcharge?
Instability stemming from ongoing conflict in the Middle East has sent shockwaves through international energy markets. Avgas prices have risen sharply as a result and this has meant a fuel surcharge has become necessary.
Is Southern Alps Air adding a fuel surcharge to all flights?
Yes. Given that elevated fuel prices have persisted, we are applying a temporary fuel surcharge to all new bookings from 24th March 2026. The surcharge helps us manage the extraordinary cost pressures without compromising our service.
How long will the surcharge be in place?
The surcharge will be in place until we can see a sustained drop in our fuel pricing. We are continually reviewing our costs and any changes to the fuel surcharge will be communicated to all clients who have booked with us, and on this website.
How is the surcharge amount worked out?
The $20 per passenger charge reflects the real-world increase in our operating costs due to higher Avgas prices. It’s intended purely to offset part of our additional fuel expenditure — nothing more.
What if fuel prices keep climbing?
If costs continue to rise beyond current levels, it may become necessary to revise the surcharge amount accordingly. We will always communicate any such changes promptly and clearly to our customers.
What happens when fuel prices come back down?
When there is a sustained drop in pricing, the surcharge will be reduced or lifted entirely. This is a direct response to market conditions, not a permanent change to our pricing.
Why have you made this decision?
This wasn’t a decision we made lightly. We know that any pricing change matters to our passengers, and we took time to carefully weigh the impact before moving forward. Ultimately, to keep flying safely and maintaining the standard of service you expect from us, we must account for the very real increase in what fuel now costs us.
How will you add the surcharge? We have already booked our flight with you
The surcharge will be made directly to you at check-in with Southern Alps Air. You can pay by credit card, bank transfer or cash. If you have made a booking with a third party booking platform we will still ask you to pay the surcharge directly with us at check-in. We appreciate your understanding and hope to see a drop in fuel prices soon.
